Art Classes and Workshops

I offer a variety of workshops and multi-session classes at Preston Arts Center, as well as individual art classes from my home studio. My teaching focuses primarily on abstract watercolor and occasionally multimedia, collage, and acrylic painting, along with core art and design principles like color theory, composition, and the elements of art.

Whether you are just starting out or looking to deepen your skills, there’s a class for everyone!

Weekend Workshops

Open to all levels, beginner-friendly, and held at Preston Arts Center about 6 times a year

  • Duration: 3 hours

  • All supplies provided

  • Focus: Abstract Watercolors (such as landscapes, florals, and more)

These workshops provide a relaxed, welcoming environment for exploring abstract watercolor techniques. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, these sessions guide you through creating your own watercolor paintings with topics such as abstract landscapes and florals.

Multi-Session Classes

Explore watercolor techniques and build foundational skills in a supportive, multi-week environment at Preston Arts Center

On Monday afternoons I alternate between Beginning Watercolor Techniques & Watercolor Journal Techniques

Beginning Watercolor Techniques (6 weeks)
This class covers the basics of watercolor—wet on wet, dry brush, gradients, glazing, and more. We’ll explore essential techniques while learning how to mix colors and work with a variety of basic watercolor supplies. While the class is taught through an abstract lens, these techniques are versatile and can be applied to any style or subject.

Watercolor Journal Techniques: Intermediate (6 weeks)
For those ready to go beyond the basics, this class focuses on experimenting with watercolor in a journal. We’ll explore creative ways to use your journal as a record of artistic exploration. Each time this class is taught we get to know a few new and interesting watercolor supplies, all while continuing to expand and deepen your understanding and use of painting techniques. While this class is taught with an abstract approach, the methods are adaptable to any watercolor style. A basic understanding of watercolor is recommended.

On Wednesdays mornings I teach Watercolor Foundations, an ongoing 6-week series that focuses on building your understanding of key concepts through a variety of painting exercises. Over three distinct sessions, we dive into different foundational elements of watercolor. All the multi-class sessions in the Watercolor Foundations are beginner friendly and can be taken together or separately, and in any order.

Watercolor Foundations: Elements of Art (6 weeks)
This session focuses on the building blocks of art: line, shape, color, value, space, and texture. Each week, we explore one of these elements using basic watercolor techniques, perfect for both beginners and those looking to refresh their skills.

Watercolor Foundations: Color Schemes (6 weeks)
In this group of classes, we’ll deepen our understanding of color relationships, going beyond the color wheel. You’ll learn how to create and use more dynamic and sophisticated color palettes, from complementary to analogous, monochromatic, and beyond. This class is ideal if you’ve struggled with muddy colors or simply want to expand your color knowledge.

Watercolor Foundations: Composition (6 weeks)
The final series is all about composition. We’ll explore design principles such as contrast, balance, emphasis, and movement, all while focusing on how to create dynamic and cohesive compositions. This class is perfect for anyone seeking to understand why some paintings feel more successful than others, and will help you strengthen your “artistic instinct” for more confident painting.
